Choosing the sober life with @MajorCleanBabe
This Sober Mama
We’ve all heard the gripes and seen the online posts about alcohol being a mandatory component of parenthood, but I’d like to change that narrative. Years ago, I spent most weekends at social gatherings where alcohol flowed. My friends and I would laugh at our antics. How funny it is that we don’t remember anything from the night before. The things I thought made me fun during those years made me give up alcohol completely after my second daughter was born.
I had toyed with giving up alcohol for years when contemplating my relationship with social drinking. I didn’t drink every day and never craved it, but if there was a reason to celebrate then I was going all in. In July 2021, I woke up on a Saturday morning feeling absolutely horrible. The shame, nausea, confusion and guilt ate at me for days. This wasn’t how I wanted to spend any of my time as a mom to two young kids.
I wear my sobriety proudly, but still feel shame creep in. I wonder what people think about why I stopped drinking. There was no rock bottom. Nothing catastrophic. I grew up and admitted to myself that alcohol was not giving me anything positive. I lost a handful of days to hangovers since becoming a mom and I refused to let alcohol take anything else from me and my family.
If you’re sober-curious, I promise you things are still fun without a glass of wine or fancy cocktail. More and more liquor companies understand that alcohol-free beverages are a key part of their product line ups. You don’t need to give up that tangy margarita - grab a tequila free version or make one yourself. Your life doesn’t need to change completely, but it will get so much better without alcohol. I’m here to help you navigate if you need it.
Bio
I’m a wife and mother looking for ways to lead a clean and healthy life - admittedly imperfectly. I’m a proud 2SLGBTQ ally. I’m always on the hunt for a non-toxic deodorant and an iced latte. If you want to talk clean personal care products, mocktails and Christmas movies, I’m your gal.
