What is Hygge?

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is a Danish and Norwegian term that embodies a feeling or mood of coziness, contentment, and well-being.

The concept is deeply rooted in Danish culture, where long, dark winters led people to prioritize simple pleasures that bring joy and warmth to their homes and daily routines.

Hygge is all about enjoying the simple, comfortable pleasures in life, in a warm and inviting atmosphere, especially during the colder months.

Ways to Embrace a Hygge Lifestyle at Home

We have put together a few ways you can create a cozy, relaxing atmosphere that embodies the true meaning of hygge.

Make your space as cozy as possible by having blankets in your living space. Soft, muted blanket colours such as warm beige or earthy tones, can definitely enhance a cozy atmosphere.

Dim the lights in your home and light multiple candles throughout your house. Little note; the Danish way of enjoying candles is to use non-scented, allowing for the natural tone to be set rather than artificial scents. Mix and match different candle sizes or holders.

Soft lighting fixtures are key to achieving a cozy hygge atmosphere. And of course, you can add fairy lights; adding some magic to any room. These light sources add warmth and invite relaxation. Keep the holiday spirit alive every day!

Danish homes follow a minimalistic style and you can do this also by only bringing elements that you love into your home. This also allows for less clutter, less cleaning and less stress!

This is a wonderful way to embrace hygge in your home. You can simply set up a cozy corner for reading or sipping your favourite tea. This space should reflect your style and offer a mini at-home retreat from daily life and work. This can include a comfy chair, pillows, a soft blanket and warm lighting with a small side table.
